Create an Action Pack!

Step #1: Choose a theme

  1. Choose a theme for the new Action Pack.
    1. It can be anything you'd like! A cause or issue topic, geographical region, population subset, type of action, anything at all.
  2. Review the log of active and proposed Action Packs to see if your Action Pack already exists.
  3. If it's on the log but isn't active yet, contact actionpacks@socialactions.com for an update on the status.
  4. If it isn't on the list, move on to Step #2.

Step #2: Create a Twitter account

  1. Go to Twitter.com and fill in fields to Join:
    1. Full name: Follow the format "Poverty Actions" (note for Social Actions team: column 1)
    2. Email:
      1. If you don't have a personal or organizational email address setup for the account, please email actionpacks@socialactions.com. We will gladly setup an email alias for the new action pack.
      2. Watch for Twitter's confirmation email to arrive and click on the provided URL to confirm your new account.
  2. If you don't have a personal or organizational email address setup for the account, please email actionpacks@socialactions.com. We will gladly setup an email alias for the new action pack.
  3. Watch for Twitter's confirmation email to arrive and click on the provided URL to confirm your new account.
  4. Name the account and choose a handle that reflects the theme you chose (no more than 15 characters).
    1. Example name and handle combinations are Poverty Actions (@povertyactions) and Human Rights Actions (@act4humanrights).
  5. Enter an email address for the account.
  6. Upload an avatar for the new account.
    1. Finding a picture: We encourage you to find and use Creative Commons images that match the issue area, region, or theme for the new action pack. You can find Creative Commons images using the advanced search option on Flickr. If you cannot find an image or don't have the time, you can also use the Social Actions logo as the avatar.
    2. Preparing a picture: Crop the picture until it's square, and resize it to 75 x 75 pixels.
  7. Enter a bio for the new account.  The bio should read something like, "Take action on THEME-related actions. Powered by Social Actions. Photo by __________. http://socialactions.com" If your avatar uses an image from another source, please credit the image source in the bio.

Step #3: Feed the Action Pack with actions

  1. Finding actions
    1. By keyword
      1. Go to search.socialactions.com
      2. In Search Terms: enter keywords that would match your theme
      3. In Created, select "Any Time"
      4. In Order: select "Most Recent"
      5. Click on Search to see your search results.
    2. By linked data entities (optional)
      1. Under each search result, you'll see "Entities (#) show/hide".
      2. Click on "show/hide" to display the URLs for linked data entities that have been assigned to that action.
      3. Choose an entity that matches your theme, and click "search" (on the far right of the row) to search through the Social Actions API for all actions that have been assigned that same entity. You can experiment with adding multiple entity URLs into the Search Terms using AND or OR.
      4. Compare the search results to the ones received by keyword alone.
    3. Once you're seeing search results you like, make a note of the URL for the initial page of search results (in the address window at the top of your browser). Copy it onto your clipboard or into a separate document, or simply keep the page open while you take the next step.
  2. In a separate browser tab, go to Twitterfeed.com and sign in or register for an account
    1. Select "Create new feed"
    2. Authenticate: follow Twitterfeed's instructions here, either by entering the username and password, or authorizing the Twitterfeed app for that account)
    3. Source URL: This is the URL for the search results WITH THE ADDITION OF ".rss" after "/actions..."
    4. Enter a name for the feed
    5. Click on advanced options
    6. For update frequency, select 'Every 30 minutes' and up to '5' new updates at a time
    7. For prefix, enter 'Take action:'
    8.  Select 'Create feed'

Step #4: Spread the word

  1. Send us a tweet or an email with a link to the new Action Pack. Please provide as much of the detail that we track on our log as possible, including the search results URL. We'll create a profile for the Action Pack directory so others will know about it, too!
  2. Add your new Action Pack to any blog or website!
