Social Actions Action Sources

Online sources for taking action

Social Actions is the web's only open-door, open-source, cross-platform aggregation of actions people can take on the issues they care about. As of this writing there are over 80,000 actions in Social Actions' search results, coming from over 60 unique online platforms. That's alot of actions, but there are SO MANY MORE opportunities to take action that aren't yet included in the Social Actions API. Increasing the number of action sources participating in the Social Actions API has  an immediate and significant impact on peoples' ability to find the actions that are most relevant to them.

To include more action sources in the Social Actions API, we need to connect with these organizations, encourage them to develop an RSS feed if they don't already have one, and assist their creating a profile for Social Actions' Action Source Guide.

Ways to get involved:

  • Platform Liaison
    • Outreach and relationship-building with the action source community
  • Sponsor the Platform Liaison position

Social Actions Robust Dataset

Our goal at Social Actions is to provide a truly robust and detailed description of each opportunity to take action on the issues people care about.

To do that, we'll need more data. Through 2008, Social Actions has relied on existing open standards to aggregate information about opportunities to make a difference created on our 60+ platform partners. At the same time, in collaboration with our partners, we have developed an enhanced open standard called Open Actions, for describing philanthropic activities. Open Actions builds on the existing XML standards of RSS and Atom. We have designed it to be versatile and extendible.

Ways to get involved:

  • Financially support Social Actions' role in promoting the development of an enhanced open standard for online philanthropic opportunities.
  • Participate in the development of an enhanced open standard (add links to on- and offline sources of information, involvement)
